  • Tech Talk

CGI stands for "Common Gateway Interface." CGI scripts are written to take advantage of the common gateway interface. When a user enters a website and performs any submitting (i.e. using a search engine), they use the common gateway interface. Much like programs, scripts help make these functions work because they are already pre-written.

This is an advanced SQL (Structured Query Language) database server that allows you to store data. Most advanced e-commerce sites use this database because of its reliability and speed.

    Windows Media
This is a multimedia format competing against Real Player. It allows users to play streaming multimedia files, such as videos and audio, over the Internet without downloading the entire file.

We have multiple OC-3 connections to major backbone providers from WorldCom, American Telegraph and Telegram company. "Redundant" means that if any of the Internet connections get interrupted, the alternate Internet connection will take over.

    FrontPage Support
We support all versions of Microsoft FrontPage, including 1998, 2000, and the new 2002. If you wish to publish your site, you can use the interface from the program and click "Publish." Your site will be online as soon as you have finished. No knowledge of FTP or uploading is required. With FrontPage, publishing a website is easier than ever before.

We support both versions of the PHP scripting languages (3 and 4). PHP is a tool that lets you create the most dynamic web pages. PHP-enabled web pages are treated much like regular HTML pages, and you can create or edit them the same way you would normally create regular HTML pages.

    SSI (Server Side Includes)
SSI is a type of HTML command that is a powerful tool for web developers. This command directs the web server to dynamically generate data for the website upon request. In addition, SSI can be used to execute programs and insert results into the website. Some websites with SSI have extensions that end with .shtml. However, this is not a requirement. The varying extension filenames enables the web server to differentiate those pages that need to be processed before being sent to the browser. Some hosting companies disable this feature for security reasons, but we believe that it is an essential tool that cannot be disabled for any of our clients.

    MIME Types
MIME stands for "Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension". This is a specification for formatting non-ASCII messages so that they can be sent over the Internet. This is needed to send file attachments, such as graphics and audio over the Internet. With custom MIME, you are able to display, stream or download any type of file downloaded from the website.

    Public SSL Certificates
Our public SSL Certificate enables SSL on your web server and allows you to communicate with your customers in a secure environment. SSL stands for "Secure Socket Layer", which is a technology that protects data being sent from the user to the website, and vice versa. Up to 128-bit encryption can be supported.

We support all versions of Perl. Perl is the most popular language used for the Custom Gateway Interface. With this support, you are able to use various Perl scripts that will allow you to open your store, chat room, newsgroup, classifieds, etc. There are countless numbers of pre-made scripts that can be found on the Internet.

This is a technology that was first made by Macromedia for offline presentation use, but soon developed into a popular multimedia application for the Internet. This technology allows web pages to include multimedia objects, such as interactive images. Most browsers require the Shockwave Plug-in before they can properly view a website with this technology.

Flash is one of the Internet's most popular multimedia technologies. Nearly all browsers today come equipped with the Flash Plug-in. Flash enables a website to become more interactive with its users and is the most popular tool web developers use in creating fantastic looking websites.

    RedCELLNetwork Master Control Panel
Our control panel is the complete management tool for your web hosting account. Features included: adding and deleting accounts, sub-domains, and purchasing additional services for your account. In addition, statistical bar graphs show how much disk allocation, FTP and HTTP transfer has been consumed, along with how much space / transfer is left. Every account management tool, including billing and support, can be completed through the control panel.

POP stands for "Post Office Protocol". POP3 is the most common protocol that users utilize in retrieving email from a server. With POP3, you are able to leave or delete email messages from the server after you download them. Unlike web-based email, you do not need to be online in order to view your email.

With your own FTP Server, users can access your site via ftp.yourdomainhere.com. This not only makes your site more organized, but it allows users to distinguish your FTP server from your web server. One can be used for downloading programs, while the other is used for viewing information. FTP Servers allow other guest users to download, upload or view files in your FTP directories on the hosting server. Anonymous FTP is available with the purchase of a dedicated IP address.

    Transfer Logs
Transfer logs tell you exactly what files are being transferred from your site to your visitors. This will give you the ability to use advertisements and count the amount of redirections to your site. Furthermore, you are able to track people who were unauthorized to access the secure sections of your website.

    Error Logs
Error logs enable you to view the specific types of errors that users receive while accessing your website (including 404 - missing page errors) or when they execute certain scripts from your site.

    Webalizer / ModLogin
These traffic / hit analyzer programs enables you to view detailed information, such as what time visitors come to your website most often, physical locations of your visitors, which particular page from the website is the most popular, how many hits you received total, how many impressions, and much more.

  • FAQS

    Domain Name Registeration
Choosing a domain name is just as important as choosing a company name.Your domain name is your address on the web, the place where people will go to find your business online. It should be memorable and clearly reflect what your business is all about. Typically, our customers choose a name to match the name of their business directly, like www.johnrestaurants.com, or to describe the products they sell, like www.bikingchicago.com.

What you should know about buying a domain name?

The key to choosing a domain name is making it easy for people to remember and spell. Sometimes that means choosing more than one name, so customers are sure to find your business, no matter what. Let's say your business is called John's Chicago Pizza. At a price of less than $20 per name, you may want to register www.johnschicagopizza.com, www.johnspizza.com and www.chicagosbestpizza.com. Not only do multiple registrations protect your brand, but they give you the flexibility of publishing multiple web pages for special products and promotions. Whether you're planning for the future or protecting yourself from competition, multiple domain registration can serve as a low-cost insurance policy for your business.

The second part of a domain name—the part after the dot—is called an extension. While .COM is the most popular and well-recognized extension, it can sometimes be hard to get, especially if your business name is short (Al's Pub) or common (Main Street Deli). Instead of creating a long or awkward domain name with a .COM extension, you may want to consider purchasing an alternate extension like .TV .US .NET, .BIZ, .CA, .NAME, .FR, INFO, or .ORG.

When you choose to register a domain name with RedCELL, you'll get the same award-winning, 24/7 support that all our customers receive, plus the option to add Privacy, which protects the personal information associated with your registration.

    RedCELL offers you:

Q:Is 40GB enough bandwidth for my website?
A:It should be more then enough for a web site that is not excessive in size (amount of pages) or daily traffic. For your site to use more then 40GB of transfer/bandwidth your site would have to be receiving a large amount of visitors on a daily basis and/or have many pages that are being accessed.

Example: Every time one of your web pages is viewed by someone on the internet, the size of that page goes towards your bandwidth usage. Below is an example of how many times a page would have to be viewed to reach 40GB of transfer
    page size 30kb = 1,398,101 views
    page size 40kb = 1,048,576 views
    page size 50kb = 838,861 views
    page size 60kb = 699,051 views

    Q:What are Jsps/Servlets?
A:Servlets are programs written in Java that run in conjunction with a Servlet Runner. Unlike previous attempts to provide the same sort of functionality such as NSAPI, ISAPI, etc. Java Servlets run on most web servers with little or no modification. Java Server Pages (JSP) is a scripting language that's a hybrid of Java and HTML. Much like ASP and PHP, it allows web designers to embed scripting code in their HTML pages. When a JSP page is hit for the first time, it gets compiled into a Java file. This Java file is then automatically compiled into a .class file and placed in your WEB-INF directory. Whenever you make changes to the JSP file then Resin automatically detects this and recompiles it..

Q:What version of Java is supported?
    A:Depending on the server.

Q:Where do I put my Jsps?
A:Jsps can be stored anywhere you like inside the public_html directory.

Q:Where do I put my Classes and Jars?
A:Classes are stored in WEB-INF/classes. Jars are stored in WEB-INF/lib.

Q:What is the webapps directory for?
A:The webapps directory is for the deployment of .war (Web Archive) files,Web Archives allow a website to be compressed into 1 file which can be transported or uploaded to the server more easily than hundreds of separate files.

For an example please see: /access1.sun.com/techarticles/simple.WAR.html

    Q:What is a web.xml?
A:The web.xml is kind of like a config file for Servlets, for Resin to find this it must be placed in WEB-INF/. JavaMail is a collection of jar libraries that can be used to give a Java application the ability to send and receive emails.

    Q:How do I use JavaMail?
A:You must upload the JavaMail activation.jar and mail.jar into your WEB-INF/lib directory, these jar files are included with the JavaMail.

to use this Sample simple upload it into your public_html/webapps directory and wait for Resin to extract it please note you will need to make some very small changes to the sendmail.jsp, (these are described in readme.txt) so you will need to download these, make the changes and then re-upload them.

Q:Do you support Microsoft Access Database?
    We do offer MYSQL database.

Q:How do I move my domain to RedCELL?
A:If you purchased a new domain name with your hosting package, your domain name will be set up automatically. You do not have to do anything. If you have an existing domain name and want the domain name transferred to RedCELL, you have to change your name servers.

Q:How do I change my name servers?

    Primary : ns1.redcellsolution.com
    Secondary : ns2.redcellsolution.com

Q:Why isn't my domain name working?

    Web / FTP Stats
The Web / FTP Stats option gives you access to your site's web statistics such as how many visitors accessed your website, how much data that was downloaded, errors etc.

    Protect Directories
The Password Protect Directory feature in your Control Panel allows you to restrict access to a particular directory within your account and allow access by assigning usernames and passwords to individuals that you choose to allow such access.

To access this feature click on Web Protect. You will be asked to select the directory that you want to protect, simply click the text link of the directory name and you will be taken to the screen where you complete the specifics for user information.

You will need to enter a unique name (Protected Resource Name) for this password protection in the upper section of the screen. The name must be a single word or phasewith no spaces. Enter the name and click the save button. Now you are ready to add users that can have access to the specific directory.

To add a new user, simply input the username and password and click Save. You will be taken to a screen that will confirm the new user and you can click the link on the bottom of the screen to go back and add more users.

To change a password for a user, simply input the username and the new password for the user and click Save.

NOTE: This feature might not work with Front Page Extensions Installed.

NOTE: Usernames and passwords MUST be from 6 to 8 characters long. Any less than 6 or greater than 8 will cause your protected directory cease to function and you will receive an error when trying to enter the directory.

To delete a user, select the user from the list and click the Delete button

    File Manager
The File Manager Option within your Control Panel can prove to be a very powerful feature. It will handle many of the functions that an FTP or Telnet client will handle, all from within your browser. With the File Manager you can set permissions, upload files from your hard drive, create and edit html files and create subdirectories.

When you click on the File Manager feature inside your Control Panel, you will find that the screen is divided into three frames.

The left frame will show you your directories and files

Within each directory on the left frame, you will see links to create a new file, create new folder, or upload files. These actions pertain specifically to the directory that you are currently in. You will also see a column of numbers to the right of each folder and file. The far right column are the current permission settings for that specific folder or file and the column to the left of the permissions is the actual size of the that file or folder. When you click on the graphic next to the text link for a folder, it will open that folder and display the files and folders within that folder. When you click on the actual text link for a folder or file, actions for that directory or file are displayed in the upper right hand corner of your screen:

Locate your public_html folder and click on the text link for it. You will see the actions for the folder appear in the upper right hand corner of your screen

Actions are pretty self-explanatory, so we'll forgo explaining what each do.

However, if you will locate a file rather than a folder within your directory listing and click on the text link of a file, you will see that the action screen will change to the specific actions pertaining to actual files and you will notice that the actions that you can perform for files are quite different from those of a folder:

By clicking on Show File, a new window will open and show you what the file actually looks like in your browser. By clicking on Edit File, you will be taken to a window where you can actually edit the html code within the file itself and save the changes. You can also change the permissions for the file, or copy, move, delete, or rename.

Remember, DO NOT DELETE OR RENAME any files that the system creates. Also, remember that any files that you want available on the World Wide Web, must be placed within your public_html folder

    The FTP Manager
    Multiple FTP Accounts

Users whose account plans include Multiple FTP accounts can setup ftp access for users through the FTP Feature inside your Control Panel. From inside the FTP feature, click on FTP Accounts and add a username and password for the user that you are granting ftp access. The user then can access your account utilizing the same instructions you received with your welcome email.

    Anonymous FTP

Virtual domain account users whose plans include Anonymous FTP can allow anonymous FTP access to visitors wishing to download or upload files to your web site as if you were running your own FTP server. You can enable (and disable) ANON FTP access within the FTP Feature inside your Control Panel.

If you are going to allow people to upload files to your site, make sure you keep track of your disk space usage via your Control Panel.

Do not allow your disk space usage to get too close to your maximum disk space allocation or you may experience problems accessing your site via FrontPage and/or be unable to upload or modify files.

Once you enable ANON FTP in your Control Panel, files can be accessed anonymously via an FTP client.

Anonymous visitors wishing to access your site via FTP must use your domain name as the FTP hostname, username of anonymous and password of guest.

Your anonymous FTP site is completely different from your website. When people FTP to your domain anonymously, they will see the following directories:

"pub" is where you should put all your anonymously accessible files.
"incoming" is for the anonymous users to upload files.
    For security the following applies

Only the incoming directory can be written by anonymous users. Sub-directories cannot be created by anonymous users. The incoming directory is not readable by anonymous users

To access the anonymous FTP site via the web, use the following address: ftp:/yourdomain.com/pub/

The backup option will allow you to backup and compress your files and databases. It also allows you to download your backup files to store at a secure location

    Mime Types
This feature does not work with FrontPage. FrontPage users will need to add Mime Types from the FrontPage program itself.

The MIME Types option in your Control Panel allows you to set certain programs to be used for specific extensions.

In easier-to-understand terms, MIME Types helps your web server to identify what type of file is being requested by the browsers. For instance, when the web server gets a request from a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape for a file that ends in .html, the web server knows that it is an HTML document because that extension is stored as a Mime Type. If the web server gets a request from a browser for a file that ends in .gif, the web server knows that it is an image because that too is stored as a Mime Type. This applies to every file, image, application, etc. that may be requested by a web browser. If the extension is not stored as a Mime Type, the web server will not recognize it and will not be able to assist the browser and that particular file type will not be viewable by the user.

Mime types are identified by the server by the following format:

    subtype/type extension

For example adding the following two Mime Types will allow users to view ipx images on your web pages:

    application/x-ipscript .ips
    application/x-ipix .ipx

application identifies the subtype, x-ipscript identifies the application, and .ips identifies the extension used for that application.

    Changing your passwords
Changing Passwords for Control Panel, FTP and FrontPage.

When your website is initially setup you are provided with a temporary password to access your account.

It is extremely important to change this password immediately.

To change your password click on the Change Password option and follow the instructions. When changing your password, you need to choose a password with at least 6 character but with not more than 8 characters.

NOTE: The system is setup to detect easy passwords. It will not allow you to change your password unless you use a mixture of numeric and alphabetic characters.

When you change your password for accessing your Control Panel you are also changing your password for your FTP and FrontPage access, therefore you will need to change the password inside your FTP/FrontPage programs. You are also changing the password for your default email account (see changing email passwords below).

If you are unable to access your Control Panel because you've lost your password, you will need to email support and provide us with a new password. Passwords are one way encrypted, therefore, we cannot access your password.

    Changing Passwords for Email Accounts.
The password for your root (default) email account is the same as the password you use to access your account via your control panel or through ftp and FrontPage. To change the password for all other email accounts enter your control panel and click on Add/Remove Accounts. You will then see the option to change password to the right of each email account.

    MySQL Database
MySQL is a database engine that you can use with your web site. You can create a new database, and manage it from the control panel. You will be able to add/edit/delete tables, fields, and values. You can also run queries on the database if you need to.

    Microsoft FrontPage
The FrontPage Extensions option allows you to install FrontPage extensions which are necessary in order to use FrontPage with your site. You can also verify that they are installed or remove them if you do not wish to use them anymore
